(Breath) Attention Span
How to measure your attention span on your own
You can measure your attention span on your own with the 3 simple steps:
- start a timer.
- pay attention to your breathing at all times.
- stop the timer if you paid attention to something else.
The number shown in the timer is your attention span (on the breath). It is also called breath attention span.
Limitations of this measurement: If you do not have the ability to notice when you are distracted, the measurement will be inaccurate. The measurement alone does not captures a comprehensive aspect of attention. But the measurement can provide valuable insights into one’s attentional ability and progress of one’s meditation practice as a beginner.
Breath Attention Span
Breath attention span is an attention span on the breath. It is the length of time one can sustain attention on the breath.
Breath attention span is an indicator of inner wellbeing, mental health, volition and self-regulation. It is also an indicator for progress in meditation practice for beginners.
Attention Span Test as a Mindfulness Practice
The attention span measurement does more than just measuring the attention span. It is also a mindfulness practice. It can improve vital mental functions such as attention, self-regulation, self-awareness, volition and cognition.
